The Township of Hillside is governed by the Faulkner Act, under N.J.S.A 40A:63-1 et seq.,using the Mayor-Council form of municipal government (plan four) as of July 1, 1997. There is a Mayor and a seven member Township Council. All Council members are elected in a non-partisan election to four year terms on a staggered basis. Three are Council-at-large seats and four come from wards. All four ward seats come up for election together and the Mayoral and at large seats come up together two years later. Elections take place in November, in conjunction with the general election. With a population of 21,404 and approximately 210 full-time employees, the Township of Hillside is located in Union County.
